Heading into Sunday’s finale of a weekend series with the Miami Marlins, a game that will get the Phillies more than 2/3 of the way through a long 10-game road trip, the club remains a surprising winner here in the 2016 season.
The Phillies take a 17-14 mark into this afternoon’s contest with the Fish.
That puts them in a virtual tie with Miami for 3rd place in the NL East and for the final NL Wildcard berth.
Both teams are just two games behind the New York Mets and 2.5 behind the Washington Nationals for the division lead.
Everyone in baseball, most especially Phillies fans and the team themselves, knows that the team has achieved to this point despite one of the worst offensive lineups in the game.
The Phillies do have a couple of good hitters, but the team is being held back from making much more of a move in the standings as currently constituted by a lack of depth down through their batting order.
There are six main culprits to the poor offensive performance by the team as far as I am concerned.
For most of these players, the countdown clock is ticking loudly. For a few of them, the alarm is about to go off on their time in the big leagues, at least in red pinstripes.
Let’s look at those six players, what options that the Phillies might have to replace them, and how soon we might see those options utilized and actual changes made to the big league roster.
